The present study investigated the possibility of palmiwon improving the overt diabetes in BB rats. Ninety BB rats [29 normal (BBn) and 61 diabetes-prone (BBdp)] were kept from weaning to 120 days old, of which 31 BBdp rats were given palmiwon in their diet. Palmiwon is a mixed herbal medicine. The preliminary characterization of the antidiabetic effects of palmiwon was realized with the clinical features such as polyurea, polydipsia, hyperphagia, hyperglycaemia, and the rapid downhill course of body weight. The onset of the syndrome was slightly delayed in the palmiwon-fed group. Measurements of body weight, food and water intake, and urine volume gave no clear warning of impending diabetes, but with the onset they began to change. After onset hyperglycaemia occured, the loss of body weight continued until the final stage of the disease.
